honourable mention of aart

AART received honourable mention for its new extension to TEC/Teknisk Erhvervsskole Center, a vocational college at Avedøre Holme, when the Municipality of Hvidovre awarded its annual architectural prize.
In its citation the prize committee stated:
"The architectural design of the school complex makes no effort to disguise the fact that it is located in an industrial estate. The materials and the building methods are not essentially different from the other buildings in the area, and yet it is obvious that this is a building with higher ambitions than merely providing the simplest possible framework for its activities. It is a building complex which allows its users to identify with the place. As is the case with a number of other "everyday buildings", it is not the choice of particularly exclusive materials, but the simplicity of the design, which has been used to create striking and identity-shaping details, that lifts the school complex beyond some kind of normality and lends it a distinct character of its own".
The new extension comprises two types of buildings: the spacious, graphic pattern workshop halls and the elongated red buildings containing office facilities, a canteen and classrooms. The total floor space is 16,000 m2.
Teknisk Erhvervsskole Center and AART were presented with the honour and a diploma at a gathering at Hvidovre Town Hall on Tuesday, 28 October. The project was executed in cooperation with consultant engineers COWI A/S and KPC, Herning.
