the planning of østfold hospital about to start

17-02-2009

Back in 2002 a consortium of the architectural practices AA Arkitekter (later merged with Arkitema), AART and the Norwegian practice Eliassen & Lambertz-Nilssen Arkitekter won an international architectural competition for a new large-scale hospital near Grålum, about 100 kilometres southeast of Oslo.

After many negotiations the project has finally been given the go-ahead. Indeed good news in times like these as it means permanent employment for 20-30 people for a number of years.

– We are really delighted that the project finally seems to come to fruition, and the timing could not have been better as parts of the construction industry are presently facing a sharp decline, says Anders Strange, managing director of AART.

The Norwegian hospital project was named "Bright prospects" to underscore the attitude that modern health architecture should signal anything but illness:

– The hospitals of the future are moving towards provision of preventive care which aims at keeping us healthy unlike the present practice where we have to be ill to be admitted to a hospital. With the design of the newØstfold Hospital we believe that we have taken a big step towards the health care house of the future, explains Anders Strange. The Østfold Hospital - with estimated construction costs of NOK 4bn - is expected to be completed in 2015. It will bring together the activities of four existing hospitals and one psychiatric ward.
